Since completing 1992’s ‘A Penny For My Thoughts’, Common fulfilled their contract with Virgin Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Now signed to Common’s Virgin Records, the title track from second album “Can I Borrow a Dollar?” leads Common’s back-to-school campaign. Common was a flawless and timeless record. Not surprising from Common and Can I Borrow a Dollar? together. Such great and happy songs.
Some of the arrangements found on Can I Borrow a Dollar? are surprisingly edgy. Some call Take It EZ from Can I Borrow a Dollar? as a quiet invitation of an artist to sit and listen. In Heidi Hoe the music gets its power. Breaker 1/9 very upbeat. This track is clearly meant to showcase Common’s vocal abilities. No Defense is a song to enjoy for years to come. Blows To The Temple is a striking and quite long song. Just In The Nick Of Rhyme sets the tone for the entire album. Although Tricks Up My Sleeve is very melodic it is far from sad. Overall a nice softer song. Soul By The Pound is absolutely incredible. Pitchin’ Pennies is the best music that I have heard from anyone in any area of music.
