After seeing Step In The Arena, I had to have a good Gang Starr cd. Gang Starr’s debut, ‘Step in the Arena’, does not fit easily into one genre. There is so much to love about Gang Starr, starting with incredible harmonies, songwriting chops and stellar stage presence. Cool, but I like their other actual stuff better like Step in the Arena.
Name Tag - Premier & The Guru is Gang Starr’s best work in years. Such hits like Execution Of A Chump (No More Mr. Nice Guy Pt.2) will leave you hooked. Who’s Gonna Take The Weight? is simply astounding. Opening track The Meaning Of A Name shows the best of Gang Starr. This is the most melodic ambitious and satisfying track in Step in the Arena. As I Read My S-A - isn’t quite as powerful vocally, but has a beautiful melody. Say Your Prayers is perfect. Just To Get A Rep is almost impossible to review. I find myself hearing bits of Street Ministry here and there throughout my waking hours. Gang Starr is one of artists that allow his songs like What You Want This Time? to stand on their own and be heard. I was truly moved when I heard Take A Rest - Gangstarr. Game Plan is possibly the best song Gang Starr has come up. Here Today, Gone Tomorrow is new, fresh, and hypnotizing. Love Sick is a very catchy tune. I love the melodic melody of Check The Technique and to this day it makes me feel good. This track is a great song that still never gets old. Beyond Comprehension is a pleasing, and full of overall coherence that goes beyond other creations.
