On Beyond the Common Ground album, Jan Cyrka have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. Since completing 1992’s ‘Horse Of Another Colour’, Jan Cyrka fulfilled their contract with Sparrow Records and where under no obligation to release another album. Beyond the Common Ground isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. I wish that “Beyond the Common Ground” album was instrumental.
Equaliser is simple, dignified and effective, Jan Cyrka refusing to over-emote, and demonstrating that less is more. Two Wheels Are Better Than Four is one of the more up-tempo songs on Beyond the Common Ground. In Search Of Common Ground had me crying as I was able to relate so well. On The Contrary is an incredible song that has everything it needs to be another favorite track. Jan Cyrka must have run out of lyrics on the next track From Your Lips. Western Eyes is perfect. Jan Cyrka offers the kind of music here that makes you reflect on yourself. Album opener I Remember is a bright, upbeat ditty. Sitting On Eggs - Well, here we get a bit more meaning. Hoodlum is a great song for a cosy night in when it’s cold and wintry outside.
