Noel isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. I am not a real Folk music type of person, but i have to admit ‘Noel’ really is amazing. Since completing 1990’s ‘Adeste Fidelis (Instr.)’, Joan Baez fulfilled their contract with Savoy Records and where under no obligation to release another album. This is my first Joan Baez Album and i must say i am blown away.
When I listen to Deck The Halls (Instr.) in my car when traffic ain’t going so good. Away In A Manger is, without a doubt, my favorite song, ever. Mary’s Wandering is a catchy, up-tempo track that has influence of music streams without leaning too much in that direction. In Angels We Have Heard On High (Instr.) Joan Baez is at his best. Ave Maria (Sung In German) is a great song to contemplate the modern music and what it really is all about. In Down In Yon Forrest the light shines equally on lyrics, vocals and instrumentation. This song may be the most meaningful. This is the most melodic ambitious and satisfying track in Noel. I Wonder As I Wander is a medium tempo tune. I believe Good King Wenceslas (Instr.) is one of the most amazing, heartfelt songs ever written. Once you hear The Little Drummer Boy, you will listen to it over and over. Voice of Joan Baez in O Come, O Come, Emmanuel is honest and guitar work is subtle and poignant. Coventry Carol is a perfect, simple song by Joan Baez at the top of his game.
