It has been nine years John Lee Hooker’ last studio CD, “Half A Stranger” which won Array Academy Awards and was nominated for album of the year. Lead single “Bad Boy” and “Rock House Boogie” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. Half A Stranger isn’t so much a record, as a great effort at dragging you into another world. Half A Stranger constantly brilliant.
From the moment you listen to Rock House Boogie you’re hooked. This track is a killer, it just grabs you instantly. I Love Ya Baby is a catchy, up-tempo track that has influence of music streams without leaning too much in that direction. Baby, I’m Gonna Miss You still maintains something of a specific flourish. I like the agression and power of Half A Stranger. Shake Holler and Run I just LOVE this mix! Down Child is the albums biggest surprise. Gonna Boogie good vocals. In this song fans will recognize the unique vocals of John Lee Hooker. In Lookin’ For A Woman the music gets its power. This is the most melodic ambitious and satisfying track in Half A Stranger. I’m In The Mood is perfect work of John Lee Hooker. House Rent Boogie is a bit different from John Lee Hooker stereotypical stuff. When listening to Crawling King Snake, it gives me such an energy rush it’s unbelievable. It’s also one of those rare songs that touchingly comfort the listener. Queen Bee hits the heart. Hobo Blues is maybe the best thing the group’s ever done.
