On Of Mice And Men album, Mark Isham have renewed their membership in the ‘if it ain’t broke…’ school of songwriting. Lead single “The Train” and “Red Dress” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. Self-described as Ambient with lots of words, Mark Isham comes out swinging on perhaps his best album to date. I greatly enjoyed this CD.
Red Dress - Okay, I just talked about depth. This song could easily nestle itself onto the world top playlists. Guys Like Us is a bit different from Mark Isham stereotypical stuff. A great put together song. After Supper is a great song to contemplate the modern music and what it really is all about. Of Mice And Men couldn’t start better than with the up up-beat title track The Puppy. Buckin’ Barley is a astounding song and it grows on you. Still going through Of Mice And Men and coming to appreciate Candy’s Loss more and more with every listen. One listen to the sheer beauty of Fight was all I needed. I can’t stop humming along The Dream. Musically The Hope is superior to other tracks in Of Mice And Men. The Fight is an underrated song: I like its lyrics and melody a lot. Comfort is a pleasing, and full of overall coherence that goes beyond other creations. The sound of The Ranch is difficult to describe, as it seems to squirm in a sensual manner, unlike anything ever created. This track is full of harmonies and gets Of Mice And Men off to a relaxing start. |titile| is quite refreshing and sets the tone for what is going on in Of Mice And Men. I find myself hearing bits of Pigeons here and there throughout my waking hours. Discovery - another great track from the Of Mice And Men album. This track is a fabulous selection of easy listening, suitable for any age, taste or occasion. I listened to the opening track George And Lennie and liked it a lot. Of Mice And Men (End Titles) is Mark Isham’s best work in years.
