After seeing Maria Valencia, I had to have a good Papa Wemba cd. Lead single “Maria Valencia” and “Lingo Lingo” start with near-whispers before kicking into giddily catchy, fuzz box-driven hollered hooks. This ten-song debut EP shows the promise that Papa Wemba has. I wish that “Le Voyageur” album was instrumental.
Song Lingo Lingo is actually a funny song. In Le Voyageur you won’t find any flashy solos. Papa Wemba sings his heart out in Ombela. Jamais Kolonga is an incredible song that has everything it needs to be another favorite track. Matinda catches attention immediately, This song is very powerful, its catchy melody will have you singing along in no time. Madilamba is pretty funky and mellow. I listened to the opening track Zero and liked it a lot.
