The Pixies’s debut, ‘Velouria’, does not fit easily into one genre. Since completing 1991’s ‘Monkey Gone to Heaven’, The Pixies fulfilled their contract with Sparrow Records and where under no obligation to release another album. This -song debut EP shows the promise that The Pixies has. Exciting stuff.
This song could easily nestle itself onto the world top playlists. Velouria has a beautifully haunting disco flavor. Wave Of Mutilation makes a person feel excellent. After about the third Where Is My Mind listen through, I began to believe this song is The Pixies’s essence. Ed Is Dead has a gorgeous instrumental sound, which lets The Pixies’s strong vocals come to the fore. This track is a killer, it just grabs you instantly. I listened to the opening track Broken Face and liked it a lot. Tony’s Theme good vocals. Bone Machine one of the best in my collection. Cactus - To me, this is the best song on the Velouria. After few listenings I started to like Debaser more and more. In Gigantic The Pixies is at his best. Gouge Away is an upbeat song with a constant snare hit. Strong, powerful vocals of The Pixies in The Holiday Song are very impressive. Nimrod’s Son is the albums biggest surprise.
